Reflections on Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain NP, Colorado, USA

Bear Lake is a popular destination in Rocky Mountains National Park. This is the departure spot for many great hikes.

Around 9 p.m. one night, my 6-year old son and I decided to walk fast around the lake, before heading back to Boulder. I took a camera with one lens, set it up on a tripod, and placed it on my shoulder while running around the lake.

This photographic spot is at the farthest point from the road. The rock formation in the foreground is slightly away from the shore, I had to set up the tripod in the water. Even in the midst of the summer, the temperature was cold, and the water was freezing.

At 9 p.m., it was almost dark. My son asked me what I am photographing, and why I am not using a flash. This photo required a 4 second exposure time at f/10, 400 ISO, with a 24mm lens. The long exposure time revealed the remaining colors in the landscape, that our eyes are not able to see at these low light levels.
