Wild Horses, Bay of Islands, New Zealand

The green pastures in New Zealand are green. Very green. Ultra green. There is no way to describe the intensity of the green grass: may be more yellow, less blue, less cyan… difficult to comprehend. As soon as I landed in New Zealand, I was struck by the surrounding green color.

I was driving in the north countryside, heading toward the most northern point in New Zealand, where the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean meet. The scene captured in this photograph is a very accurate representation of what I saw, and how I felt that day. Very green. And lot of contrasts.

Contrast between the different hues of green: yellowish pasture with bluish trees.
Contrast between a peaceful hillscape, interrupted by a dark forrest with trees of multiple heights.
Contrast between the slow curve of the hill, and the intricate shapes of the trees.

The three horse family added a touch of familiarity to a foreign sight. When the first Maori discovered and inhabited New Zealand, there were no mammals in these islands. Only birds, some large ones, such as the famous Mao that was decimated in the 19th century. Horses, cattle, even deers and rabbits, were introduced by westerners in the 18th and 19th centuries. That is why the sight of those familiar horses create a link back to a world we know.
