Paihia is an adorable township in northern New Zealand, on the Bay of Islands. The boat in the foreground is a traditional Maori canoe. The Maori are pacific islanders, who established in New Zealand over 1000 years ago.
The Bay of Islands, with its 500 miles coastline, embraces some 150 islands. A ferry links Paihia to Russell, which used to be New Zealand's sin cityin the early 1830's. In Paihia, the English Queen's governor and the Maori's chief signed in 1840 the Waitangi treaty, ending the Maori-Pakeha coflict, and guaranteeing the Maori land rights.
Before the sun rose from behind Russell, I was impressed by the colors, ranging from warm where the sun would rise, to cold in the corner of the photograph. A long exposure, 6 seconds, allowed the movement of the waters to be smoothed out.
