Place de la Concorde, in Paris, next to the US embassy. This wonderful water fountain is part of two identical huge fountains, sitting on the largest city plaza in Europe.
Cirrus clouds are rarely seen in Paris. During a weeklong trip to Paris in July 2004, I noticed how the sky interleaved nicely with the water flowing from the fountains. As usual, there were lots of tourists around the fountains taking snapshots, so I had to wait patiently for more than an hour to finally have the opportunity of a clear shot.
I tried several variations of this photo: with and without polarizer to darken the sky, slow shutter speed for blurry waters and fast shutter speed to freezing motions, vertical composition and horizontal composition, with all the statues or only a few, etc… The one that you see here is my preferred: non-symmetric, sitting on the strong area of the picture, with the right mix of polarization and shutter speeds.
