Fall at Long Lake, Colorado

20 miles west of Boulder, there is a town that is still living in the 70s, called Ward. In the Fall, the road from Boulder to Ward, Left Hand Canyon Drive, has such wonderful color with the Aspen trees turning bright and gold yellow.

5 miles west of Ward is another lake, Lake Brainard, with a magnificient view of the Indian Peaks. Behind Lake Brainard is a another lake, Long Lake, surrounded by an easy hiking trail.

This picture was taken on the shores of Long Lake. In Colorado, with 300 days of sunshine, it is a blessing for photographer when we have clouds blocking the sun for short moments. This is a nice paradox: most people believe that under an overcast sky, colors will be dull. The truth is that colors are more saturated under an overcast sky, as long as the white sky is not included in the picture.

I like about this picture the different horizontal color bands, gowing from the dark brown waters, to the yellowish bushes, then to the cedards trunk, and finally the saturated green branches.

The oblique lines, formed by the slanted trees, and the diagonal shore line, keeps a dynamic dimension in an otherwise static image.

Technique: 100 ISO, 1/5 second at f/29, 70-200 f2.8 zoom at 185mm, Circular polarizer
