The Peak to Peak Highway, Hwy. 119, west of Boulder, crosses a small town called Ward. This town used to be a gold camp, but is now a retreat of a generation of residents still hooked on the 70's life style. West of Ward is a recreational area around lake Brainard.
Circle around Lake Brainard, and head toward Long Lake. From the parking lot, there is a 1/2 mile hike to the lake.
This photograph was taken at the river on the east side of the lake. With the altitude, Fall arrives one month prior to the Denver area. A stormy sky above the Indian Peeks, and an overcast sky above the lake, rare at this altitude, allowed for a soft shadowless rendering of the scene, outlining the calm and serenity of the warm colors of Fall.
From this spot, there is an incredible view on the Indian Peaks. This trail also leads to Isabelle Glacier lake, another highly recommended location.
