Elk below yellow aspen trees, Rocky Moutain NP, Colorado

The name Colorado means the color of Gold. Many believe that the name was attributed to the many gold mines scattered around the mountains. Others believe that the color of Gold meant the color of the numerous Aspen trees that turn golden yellow in the fall.

Aspen Trees are stunning trees: white vertical thin trunks and very bright green leaves that turn yellow in the fall. When backlit or sidelit, the yellow leaves sparkle in golden shades. However, my favorite light is an overcast sky, or open shade. Under these soft lights, details are preserved, and color saturation is maximized.

Rocky Mountains National Park is a perfect location for spotting a good set-up for Aspen trees. This picture was taken in Endovalley, a valley that has limited access between mid-September to late October, due to the rut period of the elks. The area is restricted after 5:00pm. The picture was taken with a long lens, from the road.

The position of the Elk in this picture is powerful: occupying one small corner, facing directly toward the camera, the elk stands out because it sits on the edge of the picture, between the dark grass in the shadows and the lighter grass under the sky. The Elk gives an indication on how large f these aspen trees are.
