Monument Valley, Utah, USA

Monument Valley, spreading between Utah and Arizona, is one of those mystic places on earth. As you are visiting this region, staying late after sunset reveal the spiritual influence that this place has on us, mere human beings.

The sun has set moments earlier behind us, and the red glowing sky in our backs colored the buttes in soft warm colors. To get to this location, move north from the visitor center, and ask the gatekeeper to open the gate for you after sunset. Late at night, odds are that the gate is closed, and you are let inside. To get out, take the unpaved dirt road right before the gate on the right, and drive through toward Goulding’s Lodge.

The two buttes on the left are called the mitten, left and right, for obvious reasons. The Merrick Butte in the middle is about 1,000 feet high. These are impressive structure, no matter from where you view them. To give you a sense of distance, these three buttes are about 1 mile apart, forming a triangle.

On May 22 nd, 2005, the moon was fully rising over the buttes. The glowing yellow flowers in the foreground contrasts nicely with the surrounding red sands. The small aperture required for the extended depth of field, created a star burst around the full moon, giving it the appearance of the sun. The yellow wild brittlebush in the foreground gives a touch of color that balances the large spans of red sands, leading to the buttes.

This picture strikes as being a good balancing act between shapes, colors, positions, and a sense of immense immaculate grandeur.
