Bad Water is the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere: 282 ft below sea level. The lake is almost always dry. 2005 was an exceptional year, with heavy rains. When I took this photograph, in March 2006, the lake was almost all dried, with interesting patterns left by the waters of the year before. This brown stain could have been the shore of the waters from previous years.

The salt creates interesting patterns, almost hexagonal shapes. The brown stain superimposed on them, as if someone has dropped a bucket of browh paint while walking through the desert.
