A few miles from Death Valley, Zabriskie point is an elevated overlook of a colorful, undulating mud hills. The colors varie with the direction of light. In this photograph, the sun was shaded by a large cloud, creating rays of sunshine through it.
The dried salt lake can be seen behind the hills. The backlight on the funeral mountains, in the background, accentuates the mist.
From a compositional point of view, placing the horizon in the middle of the picture is meant to create a balance between the cold color of the sky in the top right corner, and the warm yellow hues of the hills. Maintaining the highest peak at a about a third to the right gives back a strong point that attracts and retains the eye of the observer.
This photo was taken at about 6 p.m. in March, when temperature are still mild and enjoyable. March is probably the best month to visit Death Valley, with all the flowers blooming, and acceptable temperatures during the day.
